Themed Living-Learning Communities

Themed Living-Learning Communities provide a unique atmosphere for residents who share common interests and are looking for an environment that supports personal growth, socially and academically.

Why Join a Themed Living-Learning Community?

  • Interactions with people connected to your area of study or interest, in and out of the classroom.
  • Through connections with Faculty Mentors, you’ll have increased access to career information, internships, and on-campus events related to your intended career path.
  • Unique opportunities tailored to each floor from the knowledge and experiences of purposely selected Faculty Mentors and Resident Assistants (RA).
  • Research has shown that living in a TLLC and actively participating has led to higher GPAs, an increase in student engagement and retention, and higher overall graduation rates.

How to Join

If you are majoring or minoring in a particular area that matches with a TLLC, you will be automatically accepted on the floor(s) in the Housing & Dining Portal. If you would like to live in an interest-based community, please complete the Themed Living-Learning Community application as part of your housing contract in the Housing & Dining Portal. These applications are reviewed on a daily basis Monday-Friday during room selection.

If approved, you will be able to select a space within these communities during your room selection time frame. In order to secure a space on a TLLC floor that you qualify for, you must select your room during TLLC priority room selection or potentially lose out on the opportunity to select the floor during general room selection.

Note: Some TLLC floors will fill up quickly, while others may not reach capacity. In those cases, rooms on the less filled floors will be backfilled, allowing students to choose from available spaces, even if those floors were initially designated for students with specific majors.

  • FAQs
  • I am eligible for my major/minor based TLLC, and I have roommate-matched, but I cannot select it in the Housing and Dining portal; why is that?
    • If you are already roommate-matched, you may not be able to select a room on the TLLC that you are eligible for because the roommate you matched with might not be eligible for the floor.
  • I am eligible for multiple TLLC floors based on my major, minor, and interests. What floor should I choose?
    • Each TLLC floor has a different feel based on the residents and the area that it is focused on. That being said, consider which of the floors matches your overall graduation goals and future career path.
  • When is the TLLC priority room selection?
    • The dates change each year, but for new, first-time in college students, the TLLC priority room selection will take place in June. Specific TLLCs open at different times, and those dates will be released closer to room selection.
  • Is there an extra charge to live on a TLLC floor?
    • No, since all of our TLLCs are housed in Hewett and Manchester Halls, living on a TLLC floor will not affect the price of your housing contract.
  • I am having issues trying to find my TLLC floor on the Housing and Dining portal during room selection, what do I do?
    • Call our main Housing Office at 309-438-8611.
  • How are TLLCs created?
    • Through support from residents and campus partners, departments can sponsor floors within the residence halls to create a themed living-learning community. For more information about the process, please contact Liz Thomason.
